Insider Buying Week 12-16-22 CRONOS Up in Smoke?

The Biden administration may be the savviest market timer on or off Wall Street this year.  The widely scoffed-at and criticized announcement on March 31 stated that the administration would start selling oil from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserves.  It sounded like a cheap trick to influence voters upset about high prices at the pump for the Midterm elections. At the time, the price of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate Crude hovered around  $98 per barrel and has gotten as high as $110.  Friday’s close of $74.50 represents a short seller’s return of over 35% in less than nine … Read more

Insider Buying Week 7-29-22

Curious how well insiders are doing with their buys? Scroll through the significant buys of the last year. It’s nice being right. It’s better to make money at it. We did both last week. Over the last two weeks, I’ve mentioned the market seemed to be discounting bad news as many stocks stopped going down on lackluster earnings. Well, last week, it broke out into a full bull on rampage. The S&P 500 rose 4.08% on the week, and on Wednesday, when the Fed announced a 3/4/% interest rate hike, the NASDAQ  spiked up 4.1%, its biggest move since 2020. … Read more

‘s 5% Decline

Curious how well insiders are doing with their buys? Scroll through the significant buys of the last year. The S&P 500 lost over 6% points last week after losing 5% in the previous week. Stocks don’t fall like this unless there is something really wrong. I’m trying to figure that out and the only thing that I can come up with is that the Fed has been bullied into raising interest rates into a weakening economy. Raising interest rates to bring down the price of oil or to untangle the supply chain disruptions is an act of lunacy.  The … Read more

Insider Buying Week 6-10-22 The Mood Darkens as the Earnings Blackout Envelopes

Curious how well insiders are doing with their buys? Scroll through the significant buys of the last year. The S&P 500 lost 5% points in what was one of its most bruising outings this past week. It’s almost a foregone conclusion we will test the lows of 2022 and enter “bear market territory”.  At the cost of being labeled a Perma bull, I will proffer that that that is the time to add, rather than retreat. As painful as it may be, this is where insiders’ buying adds some confidence to a fragile and shaken market. Unfortunately, we are … Read more

The esteemed Ned Davis research letter might give The Insiders Fund an unexpected push toward the finish. As readers of our blog should know we’ve been pretty keen on the undervalued airline sector.  We especially like Delta here with its recent pullback in price.  We also own American Airlines and United Airlines.  We know we are in good company with Warren Buffett, Delta’s largest shareholder. I keep thinking he is going to buy Delta as one final hurrah.  That’s what an Investor Business Daily article said back in April. With the recent pullback, it might be more likely. The analyst, … Read more

Warning Insider Earnings Plays Can Be Hazardous to your Health Week 10-18-19

WARNING- BUYING STOCKS BEFORE EARNINGS ANNOUNCEMENTS CAN BE ESPECIALLY RISKY. Stocks have outsized moves on earnings. We analyze these companies carefully where large insider buys might provide some insight. Insiders sell stock for many reasons, but they generally buy for just one – to make money. THE INSIDERS FUND invests in companies at or near prices that management has been willing to invest significant amounts of their own money in.  After all, who knows a business better than the people running it?  You’ve always heard the best information is inside information.  This is as close to “insider information” that an … Read more

Insiders Put the Petal to the Metal as Animal Spirits Show Signs of Life

Animal spirits are picking up.  This is the most buying we’ve seen since the market sell-off last December. One thing for sure, Insiders buy stocks when they think they are cheap.  Highlights are: Several insiders bought GE stock immediately prior to and immediately after Harry Markapolis’s interview on CNBC where he alleged fraud. Axogen Chairman bought $1 million worth of stock after the company she leads plunged 30% on weaker earnings forecast Outdoor billboard leader, Clear Channel newly appointed Chairman bought $913k at $2.28 per share.  CCO is loaded with debt. Three CIT insiders took advantage of low prices to … Read more

No Time For Heroes

The Insiders Fund, went 80% to cash last Wednesday in part market-driven, in part disillusioned with the likelihood of a China trade deal.  The Fund had a great run up this year, over 24%, and now many stocks appear grossly over-valued.  The “cloud” software stocks seem to have nothing but clouds themselves supporting their valuations.  To top it off Uber went public at an $85 billion dollar valuation. This is for a company that has never made money, maybe never will as the drivers are estimated to be making less than minimum wage after factoring the cost of their … Read more

The Best Way to Play Boeing is to Buy American Airlines $AAL

While many investors who have been richly rewarded by owning Boeing Co have seen sharp share price appreciation, I’d say owning Boeing is dead money for now. It will take weeks if not months for the 737 Max to get recertified by the FAA and the reputational hit could take far longer. After listening to American Airlines earnings conference call and Boeing executives, there is some doubt that Boeing is going to reimburse the victims of the Lion’s Air and Ethiopian Airlines for the crashes, it’s absolute certainty that Boeing will reimburse its major US airline customers like American Airlines … Read more

Insiders sell stock for many reasons, but they generally buy for just one – to make money.  As a standard, we only look at material amounts of money, $100 thousand or more, as anything less could just be window dressing. The bar is different with selling, because the natural state of management is to be sellers. This is because most companies provide significant amounts of management compensation packages as stock. Therefore, with selling, we analyze for unusual patterns, … Read more

Time to buy more airlines $DAL,$UAL,$LUV

I think the Trump admistration will eventually throw US carriers a big bone with some sanctions against the Gulf carriers and other state owned airlines plus some insider buying, low valuations, strong cash flow, Buffett long term sponsorship, and low fuel prices long term.   DAL and LUV are clearly the best run companies.

Notes from Enercom 2012

First of all men’s suits are back in force.  Everyone is wearing a suit.  My big takeway besides men’s haberdashery is that every single company presenting (and there are a lot of them- just about every oil and gas company you never heard of plus a few majors like APA, APC, Petrobras, etc.) is talking about how they have aggressively switched away from drilling for natural gas to oily liquids.  Everyone is bragging about how fast they are making the transition.  Considering it is currently against the law to export raw crude from the U.S, there will undoubtedly be a … Read more
