Insider Buying Week 06-21-24

It’s that familiar time of year again when insiders are blocked from transacting in their own stock due to pending 2nd quarter earnings. At least two of the notable buys were stocks The Insiders Fund is already pretty heavily invested in: Exxon and Biohaven. So, at least, the research toll on me will be minimal as I’ve spent this blistering weekend supervising a landscape project at my house. That’s the featured image if you’re wondering what that has to do with stocks. It doesn’t.   Name: Maria S. Dreyfus Position: Director Transaction Date: 2023-06-17 Shares Bought: 18,310 Average Price Paid: … Read more

Insider Buying Week 11-10-23 Another Week of the Impossible Possibility

Barron’s magazine cover read, “Clean Energy Stocks have collapsed,” but it’s not just clean energy.  It’s all energy.  The fossil fuel kind, traditional energy, continued its dismal fall performance as demand concerns and the fear of recession crushed the good and “bad” kinds of energy.  It seems impossible to have it both ways: green energy investments collapsing, and oil and gas stocks faltering, but that’s our world. Powell hints at interest rates stabilizing or even coming down, and the market takes off.  It didn’t take long for the drop in interest rate rates to collide with reality, the never-ending U.S. … Read more

Insider Buying Week 8-04-23 Hydrocarbons Make the Modern World Modern

Oil and gas have been the best-performing sector in the market for the last couple of weeks. There is much talk about an oil surplus, and economic weakness in China, the world’s largest petroleum consumer.  Analysts are often too deep in the woods to see the trees.  It is true that Opec et al. Russia fiddle with the supply of oil in an attempt to manipulate the price, but it is equally true that every industrialized economy attempts to influence the price, supply, and consumption of the world’s most important commodity. For example, The U.S. sold off its Strategic Petroleum … Read more

‘s annual take on the future of energy

While oil and gas stocks are collapsing, it is useful to contemplate a horizon beyond the end or your nose.  Who knows when crude prices will recover but according to Exxon we are going to be using a lot more of it, not less for a long time to come. “ExxonMobil (ticker: XOM) released its 2015 Outlook for Energy this week. Seeking Blue Revisit

We developed an investment thesis based on the discounted cash flow valuations of some of the most credit worthy companies in the S&P 500.  All of them blue chips, trading at substantial discounts to their net worth, we called this “Seeking Blue”.  You can see our original analysis at http://workshops.saxangle.com/seeking-blue/.  We decided to revisit this valuation.  The bottom line is that many of these companies remain substantially undervalued.  And this is with our pessimistic scenario of zero growth and pressure on operating margins. The results from July 18,2012 are below:   Description Ticker Price  7/18/12 5/3/13 Change Pfizer PFE  $23.14  $28.96 … Read more

Most interesting insider buys and sells from last week

The first every buy from Exxon Mobil XOM controller Patrick Mulva steps up and purchases $1 million at $89 on 3/13/13.  We are all over this one.  There are plenty of catalysts.  Exxon is a major player in the U.S. domestic gas market via its ill timed purchase of XO Energy. Natural gas usage is picking up momentum.  We’ve been blogging about this over the last two days and have done very well with our purchase of  Dresser Rand.  Also the refinery business is very lucrative for XOM.  They are the world’s largest refinery.  Have you noticed the price action of … Read more

Iran, Nuclear Policy, and America: An Investment Opportunity In Disaster?

We have a delicate balancing act at hand between the threat of an emerging nuclear power, our rapacious thirst for oil, and responsible diplomatic policy.  The consternation in the air is palpable, bringing to mind Buffet’s famous words “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful”.  So how does one put such words of wisdom into an actionable trade idea?  Since going long nuclear fallout seems short sighted, let’s look at how to take advantage of a potential event driven jump in the price of oil once we fully grasp the situation at hand. At … Read more
