Insider Buying Week 08-22-25 SPACs are Back

Insiders tend to be value investors. Defining value investors is another phrase for buying low. It’s hard to say what value is. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Does value mean intrinsic value, using common methods of measuring a company’s discounted cash flow value, or does it mean low P.E. or above-average yield, regular dividends? Lots of books have been written on it, and famous investors, like Warren Buffett and his mentor, Benjamin Graham, have largely defined the category. A value investor more or less believes they are buying a stock for less than its … Read more

Insider Buying Week 08-30-24 A Return Visit to Inhibrx Biosciences

Insiders buy their stock when they think it’s cheap or sometimes when they want to keep their jobs. The investor must figure out that difference.  There are a few names I’d venture to short on this list if the Vig is not too high.  There are a few names that offer compelling narratives, if not fundamentals.  You can be an insider, too– by clicking here   Name: Gary L Hinkle Position: Director Transaction Date: 2024-08-23 Shares Bought: 5,000 Average Price Paid: $68.09 Cost: $340,450 Company: Burke & Herbert Financial Services Corp. Insider Buying Week 08-16-24 Party On!

The market just posted its best week of the year as investors seemed to grasp that the Federal Reserve’s known rate cuts trumped the unknowns from either Presidential candidate, plus whatever Iran had in mind as payback would not be sufficient to risk the devastation wrought by an Israeli strike bolstered by the U.S. Defense Department. Party on! We have also tracked a noticeable pickup in insider buying, mostly in obscure names but something is better than nothing. This weeks highlights include: Name: Thomas C ERB Position: Director Transaction Date: 2024-08-13 Shares Bought: 2,000 Average Price Paid: $112.94 Cost: $225,880 … Read more

Insider Buying Week 12-15-23 Glad to See some Big Names and Big Dollars Returning to the Insider Buying Game

While some stocks like the Magnificent Seven have had a phenomenal comeback year, many, many companies are depressed in value. We have no shortage of compelling investment ideas, but getting people to invest when values are low is the opposite of human nature. Paying particular attention to significant insider buying is one way to force that discipline on yourself. When not painting the tape or participating in required corporate ownership requirements, insiders are historically value buyers.  This week, we highlight what we think are notable buys. Although we pay attention to selling, we don’t write about this far more nuanced … Read more

Insider Buying Week 11-10-23 Another Week of the Impossible Possibility

Barron’s magazine cover read, “Clean Energy Stocks have collapsed,” but it’s not just clean energy.  It’s all energy.  The fossil fuel kind, traditional energy, continued its dismal fall performance as demand concerns and the fear of recession crushed the good and “bad” kinds of energy.  It seems impossible to have it both ways: green energy investments collapsing, and oil and gas stocks faltering, but that’s our world. Powell hints at interest rates stabilizing or even coming down, and the market takes off.  It didn’t take long for the drop in interest rate rates to collide with reality, the never-ending U.S. … Read more

Insider Buying Week 9-08-23 ET Go Home

Energy Transfer certainly looks like it is coming home for investors. Oil producers and suppliers have been on a steady ramp for the last month after lagging most of the year.  Ironically, lithium carbonate, the basic ingredient in EV batteries, is flirting with multi-year lows as the Inflation Reduction Act hands out $billions to build a domestic supply chain of lithium batteries.  Recent headlines trumpet the Administration’s ban on drilling for oil in the Arctic, yet new supply is the panacea for high prices. Conoco looks like the sole U.S. driller to plunge the Arctic unknown, but the market doesn’t … Read more

Insider Buying -Interest rates may have peaked but the damage to earnings is just beginning

Market gains are muted, and traders are quick to snatch profits.  Rallies are reversed almost daily as market direction is indecisive.  By many measures, bargains in the stock market are hard to come by.  The earnings yield of the S&P 500 is 3.98%, and the P.E. is historically on the low side.  Earnings surprises are met with a sell-the-news trading mentality.  The economy is showing signs of stalling, yet the Fed has made it clear, that if rate hikes are near the end of the cycle, high-interest rates will be here for quite a while.  10% car loans and 7.3% … Read more

Insider Buying Week 5-26-23

It’s all AI, Chat GPT, large langauge models, and generative image models. Nvidia’s blowout quarter and guidance sent the market into a bull run seizure moment.  Meanwhile, you hear more and more stories about fake information generated by this “breakthrough AI,” including the latest example on Twitter where an attorney was reprimanded by a judge for his brief, which included fake prior cases entirely fabricated by AI. We can’t ignore the promise, but we certainly shouldn’t be blindsided by the hype. Tread carefully here. At the Insiders Fund, we try to filter out the noise. Here’s what real insiders are … Read more

Insider Buying Week 5-19-23 If you want to play a game of chicken- Tyson Insiders are Buying

No one really believes the U.S. will default on the debt.  The least of which are these insiders stepping up to buy their company’s stock last week.  If we’re talking a game of chicken, I say look at what Tyson Foods insiders are doing.  Five insiders took advantage of the steep share price drop on Q1 earnings disappointment.  Albemarle insiders continue to bet on the lithium economy. If you’re inclined to bet on default, take a look at the PRA Group’s earnings disaster and the new CEO purchase.  Debt collection could be a hot new growth market. You can be … Read more

‘t want to go down.

Despite the best efforts of banking emperors like Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan or all-knowing market strategists like Mike Wilson of Morgan Stanley, this stock market refuses to go down.  Last week’s market rally has already numbed the pain from February’s losses. The bulls are stomping their hoofed feet at the fences, dying to bust out. An insomniac lies awake at night, Puzzling over a conundrum so tight; the answer eludes them, it’s out of sight, And the puzzle keeps them up till daylight. They toss and turn, and they try to sleep, But the puzzle is just too deep; … Read more

The Fed has a Hammer but needs a Scalpel Insider Buying Week 2-24-23

It’s a commonly held view amongst market strategists that the Fed follows interest rates, not determines them. You don’t have to look very far to see plenty of evidence of that.  It’s a quiet conspiracy amongst talking heads and futures markets that economic events and statistics are immediately reflected in real-time price action in the bond markets, dot plots, and other dynamic markets. The Fed will often talk up its view, and by the time they do take some action on rates, it’s hardly a surprise. This is, of course, by design. The Powell Fed believes in transparency and no … Read more

Something for Everyone Insider Buying Week 12-2-22

Learn How You Can Become an Insider Too – Click Here For the first time in over a decade, fixed-income investors are enjoying reasonable returns.  The Fed seems intent on keeping rates high for longer than stock market participants might like, but it hasn’t yet done great damage to the hopes and fortunes of equity owners. What I mean by this is to look at the 10-year Treasury, the benchmark index which stock market returns are said to compete with.  The long-run average annual return of the stock market average is 7%-9% per annum. That still provides a measure of … Read more

Insider Buying Week 11-25-22 Cronos Group up in Smoke

Learn How You Can Become an Insider Too – Click Here This is the best time of year to be invested, statistically speaking. Why that is, no one really knows for sure.  Perhaps it has something to do with animal spirits, people feeling good about themselves, others, who knows?  Animal spirits can’t be overrated.  People are more likely to bet on the future when they feel good about the present. This statistical stock market tailwind isn’t as strong in bear markets, though. The future for most people is just the day after tomorrow and doesn’t look that different than today.  … Read more

Insider Buying Week 11-11-22 Inflation is Dead- The War is Over- The Dems hold the Line

This week’s Insider Report marks the end of an experiment with a paid subscription service. From here on out the Insiders Report is free and I am relieved of my weekend chores. I’ll still continue to blog on insider buying and selling as my time permits. I’ve written numerous times that all bear markets in the last 20 years have ended with a crescendo of insider buying.  The number of insiders buying picked up dramatically last week some with household names like Boeing and CME Group.  There are finally some reasons to be hopeful that this miserable year of investing … Read more

Miserable Week for the Bulls 9-16-22

Curious how well insiders are doing with their buys? Scroll through the blog posts and see for yourself The market declined 5% last week, capping off a victory for the bears. The vaunted 3900 resistance line on the S&P 500 was penetrated adding to the conviction of the chartists that there is more room below. Insider buying was anemic as expected as the earnings blackout period for the 3rd quarter is well underway.  The few insiders buying fared relatively better only losing on average.07%. There are always a lot of things to worry about, but the chief culprit is the rising … Read more

Insider Buying Week 8-12-22 Full on Stampede to Buy Stocks

The S&P 500  has been on a tear.  It tacked on another 3% on top of last week’s, 4% gain. There was almost nothing that went down. Last Friday it was hard to find something that was not green on your screen. Check out Finviz’s Map of the Market below. It was a full-on stampede to buy stocks. Apple is approaching its all-time high. The money on the sidelines is pouring in. Slightly better CPI prints were the trigger, but inflation is not so easily tamed. For starters, don’t expect much help from lower energy prices. I just attended Denver … Read more

Insider Buying Week 7-22-22

Curious how well insiders are doing with their buys? Scroll through the significant buys of the last year. I sound like a broken record. The market seems like it’s stabilizing, up over 2% last week.  Behind the scenes, the war in Europe is the 800-pound gorilla. Is the grain deal Turkey brokered in negotiation with Russia and Ukraine the beginning of the end? Interest rates have stopped rising despite all the tough talk from the Fed. We’ll see this week if they have the stomach for a full point increase in the  Fed’s funds rate or will they wimp … Read more

The Bold, the Inexplicable and the Good Soldiers- Insider Buying Week 9-17-21

For trade, details click on this link to the trades.  There were quite a few buys last week and it took me longer than usual to update it. Also, I will provide a brief recap of the conversation I had with the Chief Medical Officer, Alexander A. Zukiwski at Casi Pharmaceuticals. Casi is a U.S. NASDAQ-listed biotech selling exclusively to the increasingly affluent Chinese middle class.  CASI is a penny stock that will turn into $dollars if things pan out the way I think. They have one approved revenue-producing product with an exciting pipeline. There is a high probability they … Read more

Insider Buying week 8-27-21

For trade, details click on this link to the trades.  I had a dream Friday morning about the stock market. I yelled out in my sleep, “everything is going up.” I woke up and it pretty much did exactly that. In a good market, almost all trades bounce sharply but the stickiness and real progress from there are what you have to measure. Perhaps deduct 4 or 5 percent from all the posted returns to determine your likely return as getting them at the same price or lower than the insider’s purchase cost is difficult to do since they almost … Read more

Its Easy to Keep up with Insider Buying when No One is Buying

Most investors are putting together lists of bargain priced buys.  Here is our developing list.We track insider buys very closely and in this report. The 1st quarter ending March 31 is over and many companies enforce a black-out period preventing insiders to buy or sell their company’s stock. We are holding a lot of powder dry as we wait for a tsunami of buying once the black out ends. If not, we are all in a lot of trouble.  I did not like the Delta DAL sale announced on Friday by Berkshire Hathaway. We also closely scrutinize 10% holders as … Read more

Another Roller Coaster Week on the Coronavirus Train- Insider Buying is Picking Up

The headlines don’t stop. Most of them scary and getting worse by the day. That didn’t stop insiders from buying falling knives but not in the quantity I’m looking for to mark the all clear.  The pace of buying is clearly picking up, though IT SEEMS that Friday the 28th was the climax and insiders paused as the news headlines worsened about the virus.  In times of increasing investor panic, insiders will restore confidence, especially when they buy across the board. In this post, we examine insiders purchasing $200,000 of more of their company’s shares, looking for clues that may … Read more

Notable Insider Buying Week Ending 12-20-19

CB Duncan continues to amass sizable buys of Enterprise Products Partners, LP.  This midstream oil and gas operator  yields 6.29%. This seems like a buy in a low yield world but bear in mind, several MLPs  in this space yield double digits and have sizable insider buying as well. If you believe the combustion engine will be replaced by EVs in the next 10 years, don’t buy these MLPs. I for one don’t believe the market appreciates the complexity and cost of making lithium batteries. A director bought $1.28 million of peer Energy Transfer Partners at $12.79 per share, yielding … Read more
