The Federal Reserve surprised the pundits, slashing 50 basis points instead of 25.  Some may think this extraordinarily large cut in interest rates may have had something to do with election-year politics. I don’t know why. Donald Trump hired Powel and was almost sure to fire him or not put him up for renewal if he didn’t lower rates.
