Obscure security linked to stock volatility plummets 80 percent after hours, sparking worries of bigger market effect.The VelocityShares Daily Inverse VIX Short-Term exchange-traded note (XIV) is down more than 80 percent in extended trading Monday. The security, issued by Credit Suisse, is supposed to give the opposite return of the Cboe Volatility index (VIX), the market’s widely followed turbulence gauge. Airline nosedive $DAL, $UAL

The last few days have seen dramatic price drops in airlines after United Airlines (UAL) announced better than expected earnings but shocked Wall Street with 4-6 percent capacity growths through 2020. UAL hit $80 plus after hours beating Q4 estimates of $1.31 with $1.4o, only to plummet nearly $15 by Thursday’s close.This is the same refrain in one or another version.  Airlines will go bust again. $QCOM Qualcomm, please settle with Apple and move on!

Our read here is that both companies will ultimately end up winners. We are long QCOM but have no idea on the time frame for this investment and it has yet to make us any money.  This Bloomberg piece is one of the better pieces written on this complex situation.
